FIRST AND THIRD FOR HONDA RIDERS
AT NATIONAL QUAD CHAMPS
The Maffra/Sale Motocross Complex in Victoria’s southeast
set the scene for an incredibly close race to the finish for
Australia’s best quad racers at last weekend’s
National Championships. Approximately 140 competitors represented
their states across all divisions with Honda TRX450R riders
grabbing the title as well as a third place podium finish
in the Pro division.
New champion Anthony Yewers, third placed Joshua Ross and
fourth placed Chris Brenton – who came to the event
as current champion – all contributed to the points
for Honda who was also the clear winner in the Manufacturer’s
stakes.
Race one saw Victorian based Ross take a maiden win, whilst
fellow Honda rider Brenton had to come to grips with an early
DNF, leaving the field wide open for the other riders to claim
the ’07 title.
Although Brenton rode extremely well in his remaining races
with two second places, a third
place and a fourth, he was pipped out at he podium by Ross
who backed up his winning start with a fifth, two fourths
and a second to take third overall.
However it was Yewers consistency and fitness that allowed
him to go home with the ultimate glory. The elder statesman
of the sport - who runs a strawberry farm in WA - won the
premier title by a mere two points. He also took out the Vets
35 to 44 years title whilst racing with a suspected fractured
wrist. Coming in as the current number two and leaving with
the plate was exactly what Yewers had planned for.
“It was a couple of hard days but I came away with the
win and the TRX450 was flawless,” he said.
“I have some pretty savage blisters on my hands but
it was worth it. I trained really hard for
this event and prepared the best I possibly could.”
